Materialized Visions II convenes the work of nine contemporary Black artists, each who contributes to the discourse on figurative representation through various mediums. This group exhibition highlights the multifaceted approaches to a genre as old as the discipline of art itself, underscoring its persistent evolution in both practice and critique. In this exhibition, the artists employ figuration in distinct and innovative ways, providing a snapshot of contemporary Black figurativism in Chicago. This show serves not only as a display of artistic methods but also as a living art historical exercise, critically examining how artists today navigate and redefine figuration and contribute to a larger dialogue on the genre's current and future trajectories. In bringing together these artistic practices, Materialized Visions II paints a picture of how contemporary Black artists in Chicago are both challenging and expanding the boundaries of figuration. The exhibition highlights the convergences and divergences in their approaches, offering a layered snapshot of the state of the field today.
Artists include Delisha McKinney, Langston Allston, Lisa DeAbreau, Kimmah Dennis, Kenya Cree Garner, October Garner, Marcela Okeke, Hex Parsons, and Jeff Rivers. It is curated by Ayrika Hall in collaboration with Evoke and Black Artists Network.
Please join us this upcoming Friday, June 7, for the opening reception of this event featuring art, music, refreshments, and light bites!
